Kennet & Avon closed

THE Kennet & Avon is closed at Crofton, and will remain so 'until further notice.

Canal & River Trust state that a boat has damaged both the top and bottom gates of Crofton Lock (56) and the lock is completely out of action until it can be repaired, with no opening date given, Keith Gudgin tells us.

How can it damage both

It is however hard to understand how a boat can so damage both top and bottom gates at the same time, and asking our further contributor in the area, he tells us:

"Crofton Lock is hanging together on a thread, like I have noticed are others on the canal, and am not surprised it has given up the ghost, for it hasn't been touched during the winter stoppages."

He believes that 'boat damage' of both gates making them unworkable is impossible and is the new excuse when a lock fails.

UPDATE:

Lock now repaired are re-opened.
