K&A still closed

THE Kennet & Avon Canal is still closed near Newbury owing to the structural failure of Higgs Lock (83).

 

It was closed last Friday when the failure was discovered, but engineers have not yet been able to assess the damage, as the lock has not yet been drained, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Inspect this week

It is hoped that engineers will be able to inspect it this week, after which it will be known when the waterway can be re-opened.

It is a failed cill that has caused the failure.
