Cyclists must give way

WHILST CaRT might not want to introduce any regulations to inhibit cyclists using the canal towpaths, the Kennet & Avon between Bradford on Avon and Bath is part of the National Cycle Route Network, writes Peter Earley.

Sustrans makes it clear that on shared-use paths, cyclists will be the fastest moving people and must give way to pedestrians. It goes on to say that these paths are not suitable for high speed and so it is important that speed is kept under control.

Sharing not speeding

The relevant part of the code states 'Be courteous and patient with pedestrians and other path users who are moving more slowly than you—shared paths are for sharing, not speeding..

The Code makes it quite clear that shared-use paths are unsuitable for fitness training, and recording personal best times is not permitted and if cyclists want to do this then they should use public roads. Again from the Code 'If you wish to travel quickly, train for fitness or record personal best times, this is better done on quiet country roads'. The unsuitability of challenge apps are specifically mentioned.
