Lorry in Mongomery Canal

THOUGH we often have cars in our waterways, this time a loaded articulated lorry has overturned into the Montgomery Canal near Abermule.

It careered through the metal fence off the A483 as it was heading from Newtown and landed nearly upside down in the waterway, partly submerged, Mick Fitzgibbons reveals.

Climb out

The emergency services arrived, but the driver had managed to climb out of the cab, and there was no fire.

Both the road and waterway were closed, and there is the fear that diesel has escaped into the canal, but little can be done until specialist lifting gear is brought in to remove the vehicle.
