Open Days include aqueducts

THE lock Open Days organised by Canal & River Trust have become so popular that many are being organised this winter, and are now including aqueducts.

On Sunday, not only was the public allowed into the empty lock at Marple but they were also able to examine the impressive aqueduct that carries the Peak Forest Canal over the Goyt.

Over 700 attended

Such was the interest, that over 700 people attended the event with a seemingly endless queue to go down into the empty lock then walking to inspect the aqueduct, where some of the trees and foliage had been cut back to give a better view.

The view of the aqueduct had been obstructed for many years but now with some tree management works, two of the three arches can be seen. The work will be completed over the coming weeks.
