When the wind takes over

ALL boaters know that one of the worst things about boating is a strong wind, with a narrowboat acting as a sail, with little control, as a boater found to his cost at the Liverpool Link.

He was negotiating the docks in a strong wind, when it took over, spun the boat sideways and slammed it into a bridge supports where the boat was held firmly, Mick Fitzgibbons tells us.

Ropes and winches

Fire-fighters from Liverpool City Community Fire Station together with a Search and Rescue team descended on the dock side, and eventually by using ropes and winches manges to turn the boat so that it could moor until the weather settled.

Working together, the two teams managed to free the boat in just over half an hour, with the two on board none the worse for the ordeal.
