Another section of Montgomery re-opened

ANOTHER section of the Montgomery Canal has been completed and re-opened between Redwith and Pryce Bridge.

To mark the occasion the Shropshire Union Canal Society, that carried out the work, transported a keg of beer from Frankton Lock to Pryce Bridge on a narrowboat on the re-opened section, Richard Hall tells us.

Traditional

The significance of the beer was that the navvies who originally built the canals were traditionally provided with beer when a job was completed.

This was the first time a boat had travelled the stretch of waterway since the thirties, but instead of the original clay being used, a watertight membrane was laid to seal the canal.

The next section for completion it to Crickheath Wharf.
