Took to the country

THE IWA's London Region of the Waterway Recovery Group took to the countryside of Derbyshire and the Chesterfield Canal at the end of May and the beginning of June.

The aim was to build part of a retaining wall, on the section of canal below the Staveley Town Lock using concrete blocks. Volunteers laid over 100 blocks during the weekend as well as adding brickwork sections for drainage.

Great Opportunity

The dig was a great opportunity for London WRG's experienced volunteers to refresh their bricklaying skills whilst other volunteers had the chance to learn new skills.

London WRG Volunteers also assisted Chesterfield Canal Trust with earthworks, using excavators and dumpers to create a path over the bund in preparation for the Chesterfield Canal Festival on the 28th and 29th June.

Volunteers' Week

The camp was led by George Rogers who has been selected as one of 30 Volunteer Ambassadors for Volunteers' Week which runs from the 1st to the 7th of June.

WRG volunteers will be back working on the Chesterfield Canal in the summer, with two week long Canal Camps running from 2nd to 9th August and 9th to 16th August.
