Sunken Springer closes Tinsley Flight

Published: Monday, 12 May 2014

A SUNKEN narrowboat in a lock has closed the Tinsley Flight on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation.

Though the sinking was on Saturday, Canal & River Trust staff have attempted recovery of the boat, from the deep Lock 7/8, but have not been successful, and are now looking at a different way of raising the vessel using support from divers and specialist equipment that is being brought in sometime tomorrow, Tuesday. We are told:

Complicated

"Due to the complicated nature of the recovery of the boat, the divers have requested specialist equipment which is due to arrive tomorrow. Therefore, the recovery operation has been postponed for today and will be going ahead tomorrow."

The sunken boat is a 35ft Springer, but the Tinsley Flight lock keeper would have been in attendance as each sluice is protected by a non-watermate padlock that only the keepers have keys for.
