Burning lorry just missed waterway

A LORRY carrying fertiliser burst into flames as it crashed through the barriers of Rawcliffe Bridge over the Aire & Calder Navigation near Goole yesterday (Thursday).

It was carrying 30 tones of fertiliser when a tyre burst sending the lorry plummeting over the side of the bridge then busting into flames as it hit the ground, Mick Fitzgibbons tells us.

Feet from the waterway

The vehicle was only feet from entering the waterway after it fell from Bridge 22 that carries the M18 over the Aire & Calder to join the M62.

The driver was able to escape and was airlifted to hospital where he is recovering.

The crash resulted in the motorway being closed for 12 hours, though the navigation was not affected.
