Part of major film shot at Hull Marina

BOTH staff and berth holders at Hull Marina took centre stage late in April for the filming of a new major feature film, Girls' Night Out, starring Rupert Everett, Jack Reynor, Emily Watson, Sarah Gadon and Bel Powley.

Safe and stable location

The marina was chosen because it could provide a safe and stable location for scenes which will eventually appear to be on the Thames, using blue screen technology. To make sure everything went to plan, Marina Manager Barry Glanville of BWML and his team provided vital support, including a crane and operators to erect the ‘blue screens'; setting up and relocation of the screens between takes; water space and mooring for the vessel, Gillian Knight, which was the stage for the film scenes; and pontoons for the lighting and sound rigs.

It was the owner of the vessel Elsa J, Pete Baldwin, who really went the extra mile, by helping to rock the boat for one of the scenes when the boat needed to be pitching and rolling!

Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret

Girls' Night Out is a fairytale re-imagining of VE Day in 1945, when Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were allowed out from Buckingham Palace to join in the celebrations marking the end of the Second World War. It is due for release in Spring 2015.

As night-time approaches, the party atmosphere grows across London. The two young princesses, whose lives have until now been sheltered from the outside world, venture out among the partying crowds.

Based on original reports that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret went dancing that night, acclaimed director Julian Jarrold develops the story, imagining a sumptuous, witty take on what could have been a legendary girls' night out.
