Biggest Triathlon yet

The Montgomery Canal Triathlon that will be held in May we are told will be the biggest yet, the organisers being overwhelmed by those wanting to take part.

This is the third year we have run the Triathlon, and we are overwhelmed by the number of people who want to take part, Judith Richards writes.

All parts of the country

We have over 150 entries, many coming from distant parts of the country, and nearly all of them will be covering the whole canal, cycling from Newtown to Welshpool, then canoeing to Llanymynech, and finishing on foot to Welsh Frankton.

We have had to beg and borrow canoes to help people who have not got their own, and are grateful to everyone who has helped us. All the canoes available to us are spoken for, and late entrants are having to provide their own.

Attracts visitors

We are pleased that so many people are supporting our event, and that many of them are coming from distant parts of the country. We have always said that when the Montgomery Canal attracts visitors, they see not only that it is a special canal, but also what a wonderful area we live in.

The Triathlon is organised by Friends of the Montgomery Canal and the Shrewsbury, District & North Wales branch of the Inland Waterways Association and it supports the Maesbury Canal Festival to be held on the 6th and 7th of September 2014.

Medals

All entrants who complete a section will receive a commemorative medallion of local slate. There will be medallions printed in gold for those who manage all three sections—and we expect that most people will—in silver for those who complete two sections, and bronze where only one section is completed.
