Punting problems again

WITH the better weather comes the problem again of the unlawful punting on the Cam in Cambridge, with the threat that part of the river could be fenced-off.

Cambridge City Council is considering erecting a barrier to stop illegal punters trading after the failed effort by the council last year even after a lengthy legal battle, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Congestion

Though the Cam Conservators refused to issue licences to anyone running tours from the bank amid fears about the lack of safety equipment and waterway congestion, it has not stopped punters touting for business.

It is Garret Hostel Lane tours that have been flouting the rules, but now the city council hasĀ  established ownership of this section of bank and are considering a barrier to stop punts launching.

Another option being considered is to attempt to secure an injunction covering the land at Garret Hostel Lane that could result in punters being jailed should they breach the order.
