Drinkers blamed for canal eyesore

THOUGH supposed to be a beauty spot, the Springs Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal was turned into an eyesore whilst it was frozen.

Drinkers at the Black Horse at Skipton used to throwing their rubbish into the waterway, still did the same when it was frozen, with it becoming little more than a rubbish tip.

Littering the ice

Besides the normal cans, bottles and glasses that are thrown into waterways at every canalside pub, there were broken chairs, clothing and even a fridge unit littering the ice.

However, it is now slowly disappearing as the ice thaws, but shows how pub goers treat the canals—as a rubbish bin.

It was reported that David Crane had taken his visitors along the towpath of the waterway to show them the beauty spot, and was disgusted at the state of the waterway.

Boozed-up louts

Another local remarked that neither the pub nor the police had control over the 'boozed-up louts' who care nothing for their surroundings.

Boater Stuart Marsden told that it is a weekly event from the back of the Black Horse pub, but for a change the evidence that normally sinks to the bottom of the canal can be seen.
