Problems getting boats past the Llangollen breach

THE trust tells it is having problems getting boats past the breach on the Llangollen Canal.

This has to be accomplished so that work can start, which could have the navigation closed for a long time, as the 'significant leak' is worse that expected it now being termed a 'breach', that normally takes many weeks to repair, Keith Gudgin reports.

Repair fairly quickly

Though in the case of the Llangollen Canal it is important to repair fairly quickly as it supplies drinking water to Hurleston Reservoir on its junction with the Shropshire Union.

Of the problem, the trust tells it is 'a challenge in balancing safe and effective works with getting boats through [the area of the breach] quickly', but it was caught in its early stages, and its teams 'quickly responded to secure the canal embankment and prevent further damage'. This allows the boats at the 'wrong' side of the breach to be released.

The priority now is to prevent further collapse before a temporary repair can be undertaken to keep the water flowing, then a permanent repair will secure the navigation at a later date.
