Snow and ice doesn't stop them

THE winter maintenance work is still carrying on despite the snow and ice at present covering the waterways.

This included the replacement of the refurbished five tonne steel framed, timber lock gates at Feildes Lock on the Lee Navigation, which, after years of wear and tear, were  beginning to degrade.

Repaired and replaced

A crane was used to lift the refurbished gates into the lock. They had been repaired at a British Waterways' workshop, and returned to the site. Whilst the gates were away, the project team  took advantage of the lock being drained of water to inspect the structure and completed additional repairs that were needed.

Tony Sims, British Waterways' Senior Project Engineer explained:

"This £80,000 project will bring new life to the lock at Feildes Weir on the Lee Navigation. By refurbishing this structure we are ensuring that this working piece of industrial heritage can be used and enjoyed for many years to come."
