DURING the cold spell earlier this year a motorist purposely drove his car on the ice covered Union Canal until it broke the ice and sank.

He has now appeared on indictment at Livingston Sheriff Court, pleading  guilty to culpable and reckless criminal conduct, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Admitted

Andrew Nisbet admitted driving on to the Union Canal at the B9080 at Bridgend, West Lothian, on 11th January, and managed to travel on the frozen surface for about a mile before it gave way and his car sank.

He admitted previous convictions, with sentence being deferred. Together with his dog and a passenger he escaped uninjured from the sunken vehicle.
