Houses plans dropped

THE plans to build houses by British Waterways by Neptune's Staircase on the Caledonia Canal, as reported in narrowboatworld, have been dropped.

Both local residents  and MP Charles Kennedy had objected to the proposed development by the  historic tourist attraction at Banavie.

British Waterways had planned to build two houses on either side of the former home of Thomas Telford, which overlooks the locks.

BW director, Steve Dunlop, related:

"The unexpected level of response has shown us that, regrettably, this proposal was not seen in this greater context."

Locals had formed a protest group and organised a petition against the plans, which were due to be considered by Highland Council in November. BW have confirmed that the plans have been withdrawn.
