Ashby extended

A FURTHER length of the Ashby Canal has been restored, and in now in water awaiting its official opening.

The restored 110 yards length at Snarestone will be the first time it has been watered in 40 years, and engineers are at present testing it for possible leaks, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Eventually it is hoped to restore the remaining six miles of the waterway to Measham, all part of a Leicestershire County Council led project to see the canal connected to the length already restored at Moira.

The work includes a wetland reserve and a winding hole.

Funding has been provided by East Midlands Development Agency, Leicestershire County Council, Ashby Canal Association and the Ashby Canal Trust.
