I can really understand Julian Taylor’s worry about bringing beavers onto the Erewash, writes T. Lang.
It is understood that the beavers, if it is all accepted, will go into the river that runs by the Erewash Canal.
But how long before they move across into the canal itself, that they certainly will, and then woe betide its banks that will soon became their ‘home’, and then collapse.
The water vole is bad enough burrowing into canal banks, and I well remember their burrowing into the then recently opened Buxworth Arm that had to be quickly closed as they had made their home in its banks, causing a breach—though thankfully only a small one.
But as to beavers – you ain't seen nothing yet!
