THE SUNKEN HOUSEBOAT on the Cam is stopping navigation through Baits Bite Lock.

SunkCamBut the houseboat is to be removed to allow the lock to open for navigation, Janet Friend reports.

The houseboat has been gradually collapsing into the river for months as its owner died in 2023, it being deserted ever since.

Since then, it has been left disintegrating with a window frame and panes falling into the river.

The lock had been closed for repair that was completed on the 19th December, but the sunken boat prevented navigation.

A Cambridge City Council spokesperson explained:

“The removal is a complex process that must be carefully managed to ensure public safety, and we are seeking expert advice to support this. We can only confirm contractor availability once the lock has reopened, so we are unable to provide a further update until then.”

Then the lock can be reopened for use by boaters.
