THE LEAKING EREWASH CANAL is closed yet again through lack of water.

And again between Stanton Lock 65 and Hallam Fields Lock 66, Keith Gudgin reports.

erewashDrainedClosed 11 times

This year the Erewash Canal had been closed 11 times according to our records, not including the long closure when the lack of rainfall closed so many waterways.

Over the years it has been closed through lack of water time and time again, our being stuck twice in the three times we ventured on the canal. The picture showing once when we were stopped at Long Eaton.

In the years past the lack of water was always blamed on vandals either opening paddles or opening gates—though never told how both sets of gates can be opened—as they can't.

Climate change blamed

Lately however, the excuse has been the climate change causing the stoppages—as this stoppage.

But boaters are aware of the real problem.  Leakage of both gates and the waterway.
