Paddles failing on the 'Narrow'

Published: Wednesday, 17 April 2024

IT WOULD seem that the paddles are not in such good condition on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal

Already this month and the start of the boating season it has been closed twice through paddle failure. Keith Gudgin reports.

And yet there are only allowed a very limited number of boats through the tunnel, leaving the navigation with little use.

First closure

It's first closure on the 1st was a ground paddle frame broken on Lock 29E it being in such poor condition.

Then on the 11th it was more problems with paddles, this time two of them on Lock 28W. And for some reason that is not explained we are informed that two new paddles have to be manufactured.

Canal & River Trust is at present in the process of acquiring the necessary materials to conduct the repairs, but this will not start on site until next Monday.
