Harecastle abruptly closed yesterday

WITH very little prior warning Harecastle Tunnel was shut yesterday, Thursday,  for the day to allow the water level to rise.

It was not until 10.30am before Canal & River Trust decided to give notice that there would be no access to the tunnel for the day, Keith Gudgin reports.

Stuck outside

This meant that boaters wanting to pass through at that time will be stuck outside until today when it is hoped the water has risen sufficiently enough to allow passage.

Today, it is told, the tunnel will be open from 8am to 12 noon.
