'Void' closes Calder & Hebble lock

THE start of the boating season and the Calder & Hebble is closed.

A void has appeared in Elland Lock that has closed the navigation, Keith Gudgin reports.

Large and deep void

This is a large and deep void under the lock quadrant, Canal & River Trust inform, with the lock now out of action and fenced-off for safety reasons.

Engineers are visiting the site to make an interim assessment.

The assesment has discovered that narrowboats only are able to use the lock for the time being.
