Man drowned after falling in canal

A MAN drowned yesterday after falling into the Bridgewater Canal near Sale in Manchester.

It was early in the morning that the emergency services were called to the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal as a man was seen in the water.

Pronounced dead at the scene

Though it is reported that firefighters and paramedics spent nearly two hours attempting to save the man, with a water incident unit attending to help in the rescue, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marsland Bridge, over the waterway that carries the A6144 where the death occurred was closed, causing a massive tail-back into Sale.

The police state there were no suspicious circumstances, with enquiries ongoing.
