Cannot charge for boat lift passage

THE Canal & River Trust is now charging boaters an 'admin fee' for using the Anderton Boat Lift as it cannot charge for passage, as Alfred Overton reveals:

As I understand it, if you wish to 'book' a passage on the lift, you have been charged the admin fee, however, if you 'turn up' and request the next available passage it is free.

Court ruling

So no change from when the courts ruled that any passage, being part of the network for which a licence fee was charged should be free. This ruling came as a result of a challenge in the courts as initially boats were being charged a fee for passage.
