Macclesfield closed until March

THE further 'leak' on the Macclesfield Canal at Bollington has closed the navigation until March next year.

Stop planks are now in place between bridges 26 and 27 the source of the leakage that has been problematic for some years, Keith Gudgin reports.

Embankment

It is the embankment that is the problem, so 90 yards of it will be relined during the stoppage that it is hoped will eventually solve the problem.

Of course, this emergency closure has trapped boats, particularly those either getting back to their moorings or hire boaters taking advantage of the reduced October rates attempting the Cheshire Ring, that of course is now closed.

Open for two hours

Canal & River Trust has arranged for the leaking section to be re-watered next Wednesday the 16th of October from 11am to 1.30pm to allow boat to pass through. To book passage call 03030 404040.

The interim date of Friday 13th March has been given as the completion of the work when the navigation will re-open.
