Open Day at Elland Bridge

Published: Thursday, 24 November 2016

THE work being done on the re-building of Elland Bridge over the Calder and Hebble Navigation, can be inspected by the public this coming Saturday.

The bridge was damaged beyond repair during the floods on Boxing Day last year, and had to be taken down and is in the process of being re-build, with the public being taken on tours of the work this week-end, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Washed-out foundations

The sheer force of floodwater washed-out the foundations of the bridge, leaving extensive structural damage and the road unusable.

The pictures show the condition of the bridge over the waterway after the flood,

It will still be the end of the year before the bridge is completely re-built and open once again to traffic, but on Saturday 26th  November the Canal & River Trust is allowing visitors to inspect the work that has been done.

There will be the opportunity to see the progress of the work, learn from the engineers how the bridge is being re-built, see how the utility companies are laying pipework and cables and walk through the actual construction site, from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
