19 years for canal body parts murderer

THE man who murdered his 'friend', cut up his body and dumped it in a canal in a suitcase has been sentenced to 19 years in jail.

Lorenzo Simon it was heard in court, (Canal body parts—man convicted) forced his tenant Michael Spalding to do unpaid work, but when an argument ensued, Simon killed Michael Spalding, cut up his body and dumped it in a suitcase in the BCN at Icknield Port in May last year.

Discovered

It was seen by narrowboaters with one eventually reporting in to Canal & River Trust contractors working in the area, upon which the body parts were discovered.

Simon was convicted after 3D scanning matched the remains with tools that had been used to dismember the body were found in his possession.

Complained

The court heard that though Simon accepted Michael Spalding as a tenant, he treated him like a slave, working him past midnight and then waking him early in the morning to continue working renovating the flat. It was after complaining that the murder occurred.

Simon was sentenced to 19 years jail with his girl friend Michelle Bird jailed for two and a half years for assisting an offender, but acquitted of murder.
