Indefinite bridge closure

Published: Tuesday, 20 January 2015

NO OPENING date can be given for the failed Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal that was damaged earlier this month.

The bridge (pictured) was closed due to structural damage, but after an inspection it was discovered that a a more detailed assessment and investigation was required, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Navigation closed

This was completed yesterday and though the bridge had been operated by CaRT staff, this is no longer deemed to be safe, such was the damage to the bridge, so the navigation is closed as the bridge is in the lowered position to allow access.

The bridge had been hit by an oversized vehicle that has damaged both the deck and superstructure. Structural repairs are now needed, but no date is given when these can begin and so there is no re-opening date.
