Boat sales scam

Published: Wednesday, 21 May 2014

THERE is a scam taking place where thieves are re-advertising boats on websites such as Friday-Ad, Loot, Gumtree, and Preloved at ridiculously low prices, taking deposit money then disappearing.

These are boats usually at marinas that are officially for sale, with their details copied into the web sites, unbeknown to the owners, Paul Lillie of Pillings Lock Marina tells us. He even having had one for sale at the marina so advertised at £8,900 less than the asking price.

Be aware

It is not the fault of the websites, that are overwhelmed with such advertising and thus unable to check, but boaters must be aware of such advertising, especially if the price seems very cheap, for as Paul remarked:

"If the advert is fraudulent, it seems the boat in question is usually under-priced, for quick sale etc. to encourage potential viewers into sending a holding deposit to hold the vessel before viewing it:

Advice

Paul gives the following advice:
1. Always go and see a boat before handing over any money.
2. Ask to see documentation—previous bill of sale, CaRT licence data/corresponds with owner, BSSC, mooring bills, boatyard bills...
3. Ask owner for photo ID (passport or photo driving licence) and evidence of address details.
4. Or buy via an approved marine broker/boatyard/marina.
