Horse had to be rescued

A pregnant mare became caught in its tether as it went to drink out of the Nene near Northampton, having to be rescued by a specialist water rescue team as it could not get out.

Altogether four fire crews helped rescue the horse, with the specialist team assisted by a vet with the animal covered over its back in water and in distress, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Unable to move

It had been caught-up in its rope and unable to move after it had slipped down the muddy bank, but luckily was noticed and the fire service alerted.

The rescue team cut away the tether to allow the mare to move, with fire fighters chopping away the reeds to give a clear space.

Eventually it was eased out using specialist straps, with the vet giving the owner, who was present, advice on keeping it warm.
