More trustees wanted for Canal & River Trust

Published: Saturday, 10 December 2011

THE Canal & River Trust is seeking to appoint a further 'three exceptional volunteers' to join its board of trustees ahead of taking over from British Waterways Next April.

Three applicants are sought who have particular experience in finance (as chairman of the Trust's Audit Committee), property investment and asset management (as chairman of the Trust's Commercial Investment Committee) or senior leadership within organisations focussing on large-scale engineering, asset and environmental management.

Strategic direction

These extra three trustees are needed: In shaping the strategic direction of the Trust, candidates should have significant experience gained through operating at a senior level in a substantial enterprise including the handling of senior management and governance issues and an understanding and empathy with the natural and built heritage of the waterways.

The recruitment of the new trustees is being undertaken by a committee made up of two existing trustees and two independent people appointed by Defra. It is understood that boaters will not be represented.  The appointments will be recommended for approval at the first meeting of the Canal & River Trust Council in March 2012.

Tony Hales

Tony Hales, Canal & River Trust Chairman, comments:

"In an increasingly fast-paced and crowded world, our canals and waterways are a vital local haven for people and nature. They are a key part of our heritage that allow us the chance to step back through time and experience living history.

"Today used by 13 million people, it is easy to forget that less than half a century ago, we almost lost much of our canal network through dereliction and neglect. The Trust will build on the community enthusiasm and support for their local waterways. It will attract new investment, open up new sources of voluntary funding and support, secure jobs and give the public a greater say in the running of their local canal or river.

For three years

Successful candidates will be appointed for three years with the expectation of renewal for a second three-year term. They are likely to need to devote approximately three days a month. The roles will not be remunerated, however legitimate travel and other expenses will be fully reimbursed.
