Trent bridge to nowhere

A FOOT bridge is planned at a cost £6 millions  across the Trent at Gainsborough.

The bridge will link the town to Beckingham Marshes, that often flood at high tides, and is causing concern as being a waste of money.

Marina

It has been suggested that a marina and allotments may also be built, though both these seem problematic in view of the tidal river.

Many people attended a recent meeting where architect Oliver Houchell and Charles Cooke of the now disbanded Gainsborough Stakeholders Network revealed the plans for the bridge.

Funding

But concern was voiced on how the £6 millions project would be funded, with a representative of West Lindsey District Council pointing out that the council would not be funding it.

Charles Cooke admitted that people are complaining that it's a bridge to nowhere, but told it does go somewhere—to Beckingham Marshes.

He compared it to the Angel of the North or the Millennium Bridge, and that the bridge over the Trent would be 'iconic and stimulating'.
