Another vehicle strike closes canal

YET another vehicle strike closes a waterway.

This time it's on the Staffs & Worcs, with a vehicle hitting Otherton Lane Bridge (81) at Otherton, Keith Gudgin reports.

Such was its impact that both the canal and its towpath have had to be closed owing to so much debris knocked off the bridge onto the towpath and into the waterway.

This leaves the trust with no alterative but to close both until the significant amount of bricks and debris in the canal are removed. Contractors are being arranged to undertake the removal, but a date for this to be completed cannot yet be given.

It is in cases like this that the new system of having bridges covered by a camera that records the incident and the number plate details onto a mobile comes in handy.
