In addition to the homes, the plan is to include two parks, a local high street with a reinstated canal basin at its heart.

There will also be 90,000 sq ft of shops, cafes and restaurants in addition to a new 130,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The 19 acres site is a former gas works that has been closed for over 40 years, with the public banned from part of the site. The image is an artists' impression of the finished development.

Take 11 years to complete

Should planning be successful, it is estimated the work will take 11 years to complete, starting in 2025, but the first homes will be ready in 2030, together with the new Sainsbury’s.

The neighbourhood centre will be around the restored canal basin. The plan has been three years in the making with various consultations.
