PEOPLE with an interest in the canals are being urged to find out more about the Worcester & Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society which is always on the lookout for new members.

People with all interests are invited, including natural and local history, photography, archaeology, walking, cycling or running along the towpath, and those particulrly interested in working to preserve the canals and the surrounding area, Alan Tilbury reports.

Monthly meetings

The society holds its monthly meetings at Alvchurch Boat Centre, Scarfield Walk, Alvechurch, at 7.45pm on the first Tuesday of the month. There are usually guest speakers and quiz and film nights are held, with a spokesman for the Society explaining:

“If you are in the least bit curious do come along, as non-members are always welcome. You do not need to be a boat owner as most of our members are not, and the Weighbridge pub is right next to the meeting room as well!”

Variety of ways

The Society actively encourages volunteering in a variety of ways to suit all individuals such as conserving the Tardebigge Lime Kilns, litter picking, marshalling at festivals, tree and shrubbery planting and supporting the restoration of the Lapal Canal (Dudley No. 2).
