BELIEVED to be under the influence of alcohol, five men jumped into a lock on the Shropshire Union Canal in Chester, with two unable to climb the ladder to get out.

Of the five who jumped into the cold water of the lock at Boughton in Chester, two were unable to climb out using the ladder so had to be rescued by paramedics, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Taken to hospital

The two were then taken to hospital by ambulance to be treated for hypothermia caused by immersion in the cold water.

It is not known why the five decided to jump into the cold water of the lock, though it was suggested they were under the influence of alcohol.
