Email: Strong enough

There is a very simple solution to operating the hard to move gates and stiff paddles on the locks of the canals.

Make sure you are strong enough to operate them!  But alas, that rather defeats the object of the canals as a retirement, for obviously as we get older we get weaker.

Having worked the central canals for some 14 years I find the work is getting harder as I now reach my seventies, but wonder if in actual fact the lock gates and paddles are any harder to work than they were in the past.

But it is, alas, me getting weaker!
