Two locks fail on the 'Narrow'

Published: Monday, 31 August 2015

TWO locks are out of action on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal—Lock 10W and Lock 26W, with the latter serious.

An inspection over the weekend to Lock 26W found that its cill had been badly damaged and cannot be simply repaired, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Health & Safety

With the advent of all the Health & Safety rules it means that scaffolding and safety fencing will have to be installed for access to the lock, and even then the work will take a few days before it is completed, then the scaffolding and fencing will have to be removed.

Canal & River Trust tell us that its 'teams are mobilising' to attend to the repair.

In the case of Lock 10W a gate quoin has failed, and though an attempt was made to repair it over the weekend, this was unsuccessful, and there is no intimation as to when the lock will be reopened.
