Quick action by Network Rail

THIS morning whilst a boat was being chaperoned through Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal large timbers were encountered hanging over the waterway.

It was discovered that the large timbers belonged to Network Rail and had partially collapsed.  They were suspended dangerously over the water. As a consequence Canal & River Trust had to stop navigation, and remove the boats and crew from the tunnel, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Already on site

Network Rail are already on site and intend to remove the timbers, with it all expected to be completed today.

It is now expected that those boats who's passage was interrupted today will go through the tunnel tomorrow (Thursday), and passages will resume as normal on Friday.
