THANKS to the staff of Canal & River Trust staff at West Midlands 46 narrowboats were able to reach the Russell Newbery Register Annual Rally at Titford Pump House that took place over the week-end of the 17th and 19th of July. writes Kevin McNiff.

Additionally, staff ensured that the pumps were kept running to maintain water levels, which allowed several boats to venture up to Titford Pools.

Safely navigated

Following the Rally, 24 boats safely navigated the upper reaches of the BCN which included visiting the Bradley Arm and the lock gate workshop. Yes, we had much to remove from our weed hatches; it is shallow in places, but the trip was enjoyable despite this.

Through the auspices of the BCNS 24 hour challenge, its Explorer Cruises and our cruise, the channel is being kept useable. Anyone going across the BCN as a through route is missing a real retail therapy and entertainment location at the Bentley Arm moorings on the Wyrely & Essington, just about 20-30 minutes from Horseley Fields Junction. (Winding full length available.)

Not seen

Now briefly commenting on the Dallow Lane lock collar failure. Stress cracking cannot always be seen with the naked eye and Non Destructive Testing [NDT] is the usual method of examination to pre-empt failures.

Even if CaRT had the money, it would be an enormous undertaking in time to carry out this type of work and be just like the Forth Bridge painting!
