Back to horses on the Montgomery

Published: Monday, 06 July 2015
WITH Aston Locks that connect the Llangollen Canal to the Montgomery Canal out of action due to a leak, cutting off the navigation, horses are back in business.

A horse drawn trip boat Countess based at Maesbury is running trips along the canal with the boat drawn by Cracker, enabling boaters who no longer have access to the waterway, and visitors too, to take a trip along the canal.

Carefully planned

No date has been given as to when the repair will be completed, for with the locks being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the work is held up as it has to be carefully planned to minimise the impact on the environment and animal life.

Of the horse drawn trips, Tim Barker of Bywater Cruises explained:

"We are delighted to be able to extend our service while this essential repair is being carried out so that people do not miss out on this very beautiful section of canal that is currently cut off.

"In this day of fast cars and computers, we are proud to keep our feet firmly in the horse age. There is no better way to relax and unwind from the stress of modern living than to sit comfortably aboard our special horse drawn narrow boat and enjoy a memorable journey as you cruise through unspoilt Shropshire countryside on the quiet waters of the Montgomery canal."

The new service is operating Friday to Sunday with trips at 12noon, 2.00pm and 3.30pm although additional trips and varied timings and durations can be accommodated.
