Light in the tunnel

WITH regard to the comments about safe passage through Harecastle Tunnel, readers might be interested in the device I made to make it easier for me to travel through all tunnels in increased safety, writes Keith Gudgin.

I found that it was awkward to see and steer my boat in some tunnels as it was difficult to see the boat in the dark as all the light was right up front and the boat was not illuminated at all.

Shines on roof

I therefore made up a light to fix to the rear of my boat so that it shines on both the roof of the boat and the tunnel roof just in front of me meaning I can see them better and in particular I can see any variation in height or roof line etc.

The light is just a small hand-lamp that I fixed on a magnetic mount. When I come to a tunnel I place it on the boat roof just in front of me, plug it in and away I go.  It is also useful as a work light in the engine room etc. being magnetic.
