Landslip closes T&M

A LANDSLIP by Barnton Tunnel on the Trent & Mersey Canal has closed the waterway.

Recent heavy rain in the area caused a large section of the embankment to slip, at Barnton on the Trent & Mersey Canal, David King writes, and as his photograph shows.

Officially closed

Whilst debris did not fall into the canal it remains officially closed until an inspection on Monday. Part of the gardens of the houses at the top of the bank were carried away by the slip leaving sheds and sunhouses perched precariously overhanging the canal.

The 'closure' consists of a blue rope across the canal under Bridge 200 at Anderton with yellow British Waterways plastic and a hand written note. All of which were floating on the water today (Sunday), waiting for an unwary propeller.
