I don't want to rain on the parade, but I just don't see the point of spending over half a million pounds on Staveley Basin on the Chesterfield Canal when it doesn't go anywhere and no boats can use it.

There is still the matter of getting the canal under the M1 motorway as well as that staircase up to the tunnel that goes under the M1, and I understand there is very little left of it. My point is surely all that money would have been better spent on trying to get those locks restored and the tunnel under the M1 sorted out.

Unless of course it is all just an excuse for waterside development, that the basin at the end of the Chesterfield Canal in the town itself obviously is. Reading NbW I see that one stakeholder council pulled out of the canal scheme using its money for its own services.
