I have been away from the canal scene until just recently, and have only just realised the serious potential problems with these 'bike tracks'.
After reading one or two emails on NbW, the first thing I thought was, what happens if some child gets knocked into the canal and drowns? Or indeed anyone for that matter?
Two feet of path
Anyone who's even been on a towpath, knows that in most places you have about two feet of path then its into the drink—or the hedge bottom.
Is it just me, or is BW trying desperately hard, to be all things, to all men?
Someone once told me, if you are running a business, you cannot be all things to all men—or people loose sight of what you're really supposed to be selling—and they become confused.
Specialise in what you are doing
Specialise in what you're doing, and do it well, I was told. Good sound business advice.
It seems to me, from one of the other emails: 'Towpaths way below mixed use track width' is sounding the death knell on this ridiculous state of affairs, and rightly so!
What's the next 'good idea' BW?
Perhaps legalised brothels in old canal side buildings, to bring in a bit more revenue, perhaps? Bet you've not thought about that one, hey?
Or perhaps offering up the towpaths for the forthcoming Olympic Games, for its silly walk competition?
