Glad for holiday season to end

Published: Wednesday, 28 August 2013
I WILL be glad when the holiday season ends, so I can stop worrying about the integrity of my boat when moored, writes Suzanne Macleod.

Here is the text of message just sent to the Association of Pleasure Craft Operators:

'I live on my narrowboat.

Especially when moored, on canals, I have come to dread the approach of any hired boat (and some privately owned boats). Not all, but many, hirers treat the inland waterways as though they were a fairground ride. Loud engine noise and a significant bow wave, and/or erratic course, are the warning signs.

Please place a very large-letter notice near the helm of all hire boats reading:

1. SLOW DOWN to tickover speed when passing any moored boat.

2. Enjoy yourselves but EXCLUDE the person at the helm from all larking around.

3. Do not allow children to STAND OR MOVE AROUND ON THE ROOF while the boat is in motion.

This way, hire companies might keep more friends among other boaters!'

Boat owners

Amazingly, lots of boat owners are speeding past moored boats, disturbing mooring lines and bashing moored boats against banking. I thought we all knew better. What could be simpler than: pass other boats at a speed you like other boats to pass you when you're moored ...?
