Overcoming Netherton problems

THE problem with repairing waterway tunnels is for the workers getting to the work place and back, but there has been an unusual solution for the workers in Netherton Tunnel.

The repairs to the tunnel are in its centre, which means quite a hike of three quarters of a mile, there and back, just to use the toilet or have a break, so the workers have been given mountain bikes, as there are towpaths that can be used on both sides, Alan Tilbury reveals.

The machinery and equipment however is moved by boat, as the tunnel is still in water, with work now well underway, using a floating platform, that was towed in at the start.

This platform not only holds the equipment, but is also a sound working surface.
